🎥 Reel Review: Bad Shabbos

One body. One dinner. Zero chill. Bad Shabbos takes the “meet the in-laws” setup and dials it straight into chaos. When a Shabbat dinner meant to welcome a new fiancé spirals into a darkly comic cover-up, all bets—and boundaries—are off.
Kyra Sedgwick anchors the madness as the tightly wound matriarch, trying to keep control while everything unravels. Jon Bass and Meghan Leathers bring awkward sweetness to the couple caught in the middle, and Milana Vayntrub is a welcome dose of panicked logic. But it’s Method Man as the building’s doorman who walks off with every scene—deadpan, grounded, and hilarious.
The film’s one-location setup keeps things tight, and Daniel Robbins directs with theater-like energy. The jokes fly fast, the stakes get messier, and while some gags lean into stereotypes or feel overly familiar, the pace rarely lets up. Think Death at a Funeral by way of a very anxious rabbi.
Mitten’s Verdict: Smart, darkly funny, and fueled by strong ensemble work.
