The Wedding Banquet (2025)
The Wedding Banquet (2025) is a contemporary remake of the 1993 original, presenting a new spin on the tale of love, identity, and familial expectations. Based in Seattle, the movie revolves around Min (Han Gi-chan), a gay Korean artist who suggests a green card marriage to his friend Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) to prevent him from having to go back to Korea. In exchange, Min proposes paying for IVF procedures for Angela’s partner, Lee (Lily Gladstone). The plan spirals out of control when Min’s traditional grandmother (Youn Yuh-jung) appears out of the blue, prompting a mock Korean wedding. The performances are solid, with the lead actors bringing sincerity to their roles, but character chemistry sometimes feels off. The film tackles essential problems but often plays it too safe, failing to dig deeper. Visually, it’s engaging, with some funny moments. The timing, though, is off, with some scenes lingering too long and others hurrying through essential plot developments. It has its moments but ends up being a middle-of-the-road movie that doesn’t leave you with much of an impression. Romantic drama fans may like it. I gave this 5.6 out of 10 overall.
