Reel Review: Stand Your Ground

Stand Your Ground isn’t revamping the revenge-action genre—this one goes full in. Daniel Stisen stars as Jack Johnson, a retired Special Forces operative whose wife is killed in a home invasion. When Jack is released from prison, he uses the Stand Your Ground law to exact a bloody vendetta on the family of a local crime lord.
The film is a pure action flick. It delivers violence and action and nothing more. A touch of style is added by Peter Stormare’s portrayal of the villain, Bastion, but the character is not fully developed. Eric Roberts also appears as Earl, but the part is a waste.
Fansu Njie’s direction renders the action sequences brief, and the cinematography does an adequate job of recording the gritty scenes. The screenplay never really deals with the ethical ramifications of the Stand Your Ground law, though, and an opportunity for some sharper commentary is missed.
Mitten’s Verdict: Action-filled but not deep. It’s an okay watch if you are in the mood for simple revenge. Rated: 5.1 out of 10.
